Matt Read leaves game against Penguins with upper-body injury

In the first period of Wednesday night's 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Flyers forward Matt Read sustained an as of yet unspecified upper-body injury after being hit by Penguins forward Chris Kunitz. He did not return to the game.

His status for the Flyers' Thursday night meeting with the Florida Panthers is still uncertain, but the Flyers are hopeful he won't have to miss the contest. Read has been a thorn in the side of the Panthers, scoring four goals against them in two games this season.

Read leads the Flyers with seven goals on the season and ranks fourth on the team in overall points with 13, so his absence would be felt on the ice.

In other Flyers news:

  • Right wing Jakub Voracek has been heating up lately. Voracek leads the Flyers in points with 18 and in his last five games has earned 10 points (three goals, seven assists). All three of his goals during that span came in Wednesday night's game against Pittsburgh.
  • Speaking of heating up, after accounting for only seven points through the season's first 13 games, Claude Giroux has more than doubled his point total in his last five games, earning eight points over the span (two goals, six assists).
  • Since returning from injury on February 9, forward Wayne Simmonds has earned himself seven points in seven games (four goals, three assists), including two goals in Wednesday night's meeting with the Penguins.
