Matt Lauer on Ann Curry: 'It clearly did not help us'

Matt Lauer gave his Ann Curry opinions to Howard Kurtz recently, reported The Daily Beast on March 11. "I don’t think the show and the network handled the transition well," said "The Today Show" host. "You don’t have to be Einstein to know that. It clearly did not help us. We were seen as a family, and we didn’t handle a family matter well."

"Matt and I and everyone who sits on this couch, we often call ourselves a family," Curry, 56, had said during her tearful exit from "The Today Show" on June 28, 2012. "For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line, but man, I did try." Curry was fired as co-host, after just one year, and replaced by Savannah Guthrie.

Reportedly, it was Lauer who was blamed for the ouster by fans of Curry. "If you think the show’s better off without me, let me know, and I’ll get out of the way," Lauer had once said.

"Good Morning America" is now the number one show, reports The Beast. "The Today Show" is in second place. "In some ways being No. 2 in the ratings is a real shot in the arm, a kick in the pants," said Lauer. "It makes you hungrier . . . I don’t think it’s a bad thing to have a fire lit under your ass."

Matt Lauer and Ann Curry reunited back in August 2012 as Curry introduced a taped segment about Olympics still photographer Adam Pretty. The reunion was icy, but cordial.
