Native Bostonian Matt Damon has become one of the foremost environmental health advocates. He co-founded Water.org, an organization that aims to provide clean safe drinking water to the one billion people that struggle for water every day. Lack of clean drinking water is a major health problem, leading not only to dehydration, but also cholera, E. coli, typhoid, and others. Water.org has initiated drinking water projects across the globe – specifically in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Honduras, India, Kenya, and Uganda. The projects vary from place to place, but Water.org gives potential donors and volunteers a place to make an impact from abroad.
One of the more successful initiatives of Water.org is WaterCredit, a microfinance program that gives families small loans specifically to gain access to clean water and creating “drinking water connections”.
