A few days ago it was announced that the fifth installment of the Bourne franchise would be pushed back to the summer of 2016. This could have been for a variety of reasons, as new franchise star Jeremy Renner has a full plate himself (he's been busy with a little film called Avengers: Age of Ultron as well as a bevy of other projects) and new director Justin Lin has a few projects in development as well. The script is also undergoing another rewrite, which can also hinder production a little longer.
However, Latino Review reports that the real reason behind the delay is to make time in the schedule of none other than Matt Damon. The franchise's original star. The author of the report also stands by his source who he claims "has never been wrong once".
It was not that long ago that Damon said he was effectively done with the franchise unless director of The Bourne Ultimatum and The Bourne Supremacy Paul Greengrass would return and the story was right. Damon also said they while he and Greengrass tried, they just couldn't crack the story, and therefore the franchise was rebooted by scribe Tony Gilroy with The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner as new lead Aaron Cross.
However, if the rumor is true, Damon would be returning to the franchise with Renner also involved as well, which is in itself an enticing story opportunity that fans of the franchise have possibly dreamed of having happen.
It also does kind of make sense that Damon might be willing to return to a franchise that he was (an arguably still is) the face of. Damon's CV has been plagued with box office disappointments and critically mixed films so it would seem he wants to try to right the ship by giving Bourne another go round.
Whether or not this rumor is true has yet to be seen, however it is an exciting prospect for fans of the franchise, the currently untitled Bourne 5 is now set for release on July 15th, 2016.
