Coming off his seventh straight win a couple weeks ago, Matt Brown is wasting no time and is getting right back to work.
UFC President Dana White announced on Tuesday that the Xenia, Ohio native will take on Robbie Lawler in a five-round welterweight fight in the main event at UFC on FOX 12 in Sacramento on July 26. The event will take place at the SAP Center and the main card will air live on FOX.
White also announced the winner of the fight will get the next shot at the welterweight title against Johnny Hendricks. Hendricks has been out of action since winning the title in March.
Brown is coming off a “Fight of the Year” candidate against Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 40 in Cincinnati. The 33-year-old was in serious trouble in the first round but came back to stop the Brazilian in the third round with strikes.
It was Brown’s third straight fight in which he received a post-fight bonus for. He received a “KO of the Night” bonus for his victory over Mike Pyle and a “Fight of the Night” bonus for his win over Jordan Mein.
This will Brown’s first fight against a top ranked opponent. Lawler is currently ranked No. 1 in the UFC rankings and Brown is ranked No. 5.
This will be Lawler’s third fight in a five month span. The 32-year-old nearly won the welterweight title in March against Hendricks but lost a razor close decision.
Lawler is coming off a TKO win over Jake Ellenberger on Saturday at UFC 173. “Ruthless” has gone 4-1 since his return to the UFC and his return to the welterweight division.
UFC on FOX 12 will also feature a light heavyweight battle between Anthony Johnson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Also on the card, Michael Johnson will take on Josh Thomson and Clay Guida will take on Dennis Bermudez.
