After seven straight wins, Matt Brown was one win shy of earning a UFC title shot but the Ohio native fell short of earning that title shot on Saturday night.

Brown lost to Robbie Lawler in the main event at UFC on FOX 12 in San Jose, Calif. by unanimous decision. The fight was scored 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 in favor of Lawler.

Brown was coming off a “Fight of the Year” candidate against Erick Silva in May. The Xenia, Ohio native came back after being in serious trouble in the first round to overwhelm Silva and stop him with strikes in the third round.

The victory over Silva setup the welterweight title elimination bout against Lawler on FOX. The fight was Lawler’s third fight already in 2014 after losing to champ Johny Hendricks and defeating Jake Ellenberger.

Lawler looked comfortable early on in the first round and landed several good strikes. It took Brown a couple minutes to get going but he found his grove and started landing.

The second round was the best round for Brown. Even though the paced slowed a little bit, “The Immortal” out landed Lawler and scored a brief takedown in the round.

Lawler found his grove again in the third and forth round. The Strikeforce vet out landed Brown in both rounds and scored two takedowns in the forth round.

Brown came out very aggressive in the fifth and final round but it looked like his right hand was causing him problems. He was able to outland Lawler in the round but Lawler finished strong to earn the unanimous decision win.

The loss ended Brown’s seven-fight wining streak but he was awarded a “Performance of the Night” bonus for his effort. Lawler moved to 5-1 since his return to the UFC and will get the next shot at the welterweight title.
