Matt Bomer: Out and proud, thanks partner Simon Halls at Humanitarian Awards

Matt Bomer couldn't be prouder, of his new award and of the people behind him: Partner Simon Halls and their three children.

While accepting at the Steven Chase Humanitarian Awards this weekend, the White Collar star said as he accepted the New Generation Arts and Activism Award at a fundraising event in Palm Springs:

"I'd really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment."

While this is not an extraordinary response to being honored at an awards show, one of so many on the Left coast this past weekend, one silent element came into play: Matt Bomer had previously (and allegedly) decided not to let the world know he is gay.

In 2010, Bomer dodged talk about his love life, telling Details magazine, "I don’t care about that at all. I’m completely happy and fulfilled in my personal life."

But the USA network star who earned his big break a decade ago on the soap, Guiding Light, and who today plays a con artist on the side of the CIA named Neal Caffrey was there to garner public congratulations for his part in the fight against HIV/AIDs and so his personal persona was on show just then, as was everyone around him.

In fact, the annual gala, hosted by Joan Rivers with performances by Queen Latifah, Wynonna Judd, Megan Mullally and David Burnham

also gave props to Peter Gallagher (with the Pioneer Arts & Activism Award sponsored by Annette Block), Hydela Broadbent (with the Partners in Activism Award, sponsored by Desert Regional Medical Center), Karolee Sowle (with the 100 Women Award), and Father Andrew Green (with the Partners in Life Award), in a do named after celebrated interior designer Steve Chase.

In the past, everyone from Barry Manilow, Liza Minnelli, Debbie Reynolds and Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Carol Channing, Ann Margret, Tom Hanks, Betty Ford, Diahann Carrol, Senator Ted Kennedy, Patti LaBelle, Betty White and Shirley MacLaine have been honored at this yearly fete, so Matt Bomer was in good company with the 2012 prize.

As for future projects, this out and proud thespian, aged 34, who is the son of a fomer Dallas Cowboys draft pick, is set to appear on Glee in April.

Whether or not his sexual persuasion in real life comes into play on the FOX show that honors diversity probably doesn't matter what this talent. He'll no doubt do a good job no matter what the role as this Texas boy has proven his chops by singing with Diahann Carroll on White Collar during season two of the USA show.

Meanwhile, congratulations are in order for Matt Bomer, winner of the Steve Chase Humanitarian New Generation Arts & Activism Award, sponsored by Helene Galen.
