Matt Bomer has been more open in the last couple weeks about his personal life than he has been in the last few years. In an interview with “Out” magazine published on May 6, “The Normal Heart” actor opens up about his chill wedding to Hollywood power publicist Simon Halls and the responsibility he felt to revealing his sexuality to the public.
Bomer, who also appears on the cover of “Out” magazine’s June-July issue, talked for the first time about his 2011 wedding. The 36-year-old hunk revealed the three-year marriage just last month in an interview with “Details” magazine. He described the wedding as a chill wedding, but the significance of the marriage was huge. He says, “There’s a security, a validity of knowing that it’s legal. It’s hard to put into words. It’s just a feeling, I guess – something about saying vows in front of people around you who love and support you. I think it was good for our family.”
Matt and husband Simon have been one of Hollywood’s more visible gay couples, which is why the marriage was a surprise. As the parents of three children, Bomer tells “Out” about the importance of being open about the marriage and about coming out. He says he “felt a responsibility” to his family and allowed his children to be “able to live with integrity and not have some strange split psychology of This is who my dad is at home, and this is who he is to the public.”
For Bomer, that trumped was way more important than any type of professional repercussions he could have faced. So far in his 10-year career, he hasn’t faced much as a gay actor. Until “The Normal Heart,” Matt Bomer has exclusively played straight characters and was even a fan favorite to play Christian Grey in the upcoming “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie. He says it will be a test to Hollywood to see what types of roles he is offered now that he is an openly gay actor. He hopes he is just seen as an actor.
