Like pressing the power button and watching the red light dim, this summer ended too quickly. But the attendees of Matsuricon in Columbus, Ohio made sure one of the last weekends was one to remember! The central Ohio convention has grown immensely since its inception in 2006, and this year was no exception! The theme of the event was the classic Nintendo Entertainment System, and it was evident even with the programs, which were made to look like the instruction booklets of NES titles.
Anime, video game, and pop culture fans alike filled the hallways Friday through Sunday, attending panels, waiting in line for autographs from special guests, meeting up for photoshoots, and much more. The dealers’ room was packed with attendees and merchandise alike to satisfy nearly any fan, and the artist alley booths boasted a wide array of creations for sale by several talented artists.
The game room remained busy all weekend, with arcade games and many consoles for attendees to duke it out on. Favorites of the weekend included Super Smash Bros., Marvel VS Capcom 3, and Soul Calibur to name just a few. Handhelds weren’t left out either, as Streetpasses on the Nintendo 3DS were extremely high all weekend, providing a great opportunity for gamers to test out the new Mii games that were recently released.
Cosplayers didn’t disappoint, wearing simple to elaborate interpretations of their favorite characters. The hallways always had a large variety of costumes, including a life-sized Dalek from Doctor Who! The masquerade event was flush with dazzling creations that included several characters from The Legend of Zelda, Twisted Metal, Dragon Age, Bioshock, and more! Skits during the masquerade pleased gamers as well, including a duet with Commander Shepard and Tali from Mass Effect, and a Companion Cube paternity test comedy skit with characters from Portal.
The weekend was overall a big success for the con, and a wonderful way to cap the summer. It will be interesting to see this convention continue to grow in the coming years.
