Fareed Haque's latest band, MathGames plays this Saturday the 29th at Martyrs. Click on the first link and push play on the music player and let it go while you read this article or watch the video to the left. You'll be hooked!
MathGames has come about as the result of Fareed's obsession with the Moog guitar. He left the successful group Garaj Mahal and formed MathGames to explore the possibilities of working with the Moog.
Fareed says of the Moog, "There's only a certain amount of sonic depth you can get from a solid-body jazz guitar. With the Moog … it's another whole level of sound...Yet all the technology of the Moog guitar is analog, no digital, no synthesizer. It's all relatively simple mechanical properties that they've harnessed … and the properties are directly under the control of your fingers."
Howard Reich of the Tribune calls Fareed a musician "who gleefully defies musical boundaries" and he has worked with everyone from Sting to Kurt Elling and symphonies throughout the world. He is currently a Northern Illinois University music professor who teaches Jazz and Classical guitar, while touring about 200 dates a year. He was also named "best world guitarist" by Guitar Player Magazine in 2009.
MathGames consists of Fareed's phenomenal guitar, great inventive drumming by Greg Fundis, and a solid and sweet foundation supplied by bass player Alex Austin. Come on out to Martyrs on Saturday and prepare to be blown away by this powerhouse trio! You can see one of the best guitar players in the world for $12, or $10 if you buy your ticket in advance. That's a bargain!
