Math and astronomy app gives inside look at app production

A new educational app promises to combine math and astronomy, and families can follow along as its designer works to get it on the iPhones app store.

Minnesota homeschooling mother Nic wrote me about the app, saying that her husband recommended it.  "He likes it because (1) its from a small start up (2) it looks like it has the potential to be both fun and educational," she wrote.

The game is described at developer Christopher Waite's website, Bytesize adventures:

Astro Noughts is a mathematical arcade game set in space. Taking control of the Sun, you must collide with planets, scoring points as you calculate the correct mathematical expressions.

With various space junk to avoid and an array of power-ups at your disposal, it's time to prove your mathematical superiority.

features

  • 24 planets to unlock
  • 5 power-ups to give you the competitive edge
  • A planetarium to view your unlocked planets
  • Leader boards to battle it out with your friends
  • Achievements through OpenFeint

One of the interesting things about the app is that families can follow along with its production on the blog, learning about writing apps and the processes involved in getting them accepted.  Waite posts articles like A beginners guide to iPhone game development and 10 don'ts of iPhone game development to give readers an inside view of the app development world.

Astro Noughts is expected to hit the iPhone App store sometime in December.
