Matchbox cars and trucks have been a staple of every little boy’s toy chest for decades. So when a grandmother in Georgia gave her grandson a Matchbox tow truck, she was just giving him a piece of Americana. The tow truck had realistic advertising on it along with a 1-800 phone number. Just as a joke, she called the 1-800 number advertised on this kid’s toy and to her surprise, it was a sex-line, according to 11 Alive News.
Jan Barnett and her daughter, Mandy Vaughn were joking around about the advertising on the truck, when Barnett decided to call the number to see if it was a real number or not. Can you imagine her surprise when an adult sex-line was on the other end. She is not the only to call the number. 11 Alive News also called, after Vaughn contacted them and sure enough, it was a sex-line.
Vaughn took the truck away from her 3 year-old son Carter and even though he is too young to make a phone call, older kids who are filled with curiosity just might.
Mattel, the maker of Matchbox, was unaware of this phone number until 11 Alive contacted them. The Matchbox tow truck is out of production and can only be purchased on secondary markets such as flea markets or auctions. They issued an apology for the mistake.
Connecticut baby boomers grew -up with matchbox cars, just like the rest of the nation. Back in the 60’s and 70’s the cars came in little cardboard boxes, and were sold at drug stores. Today you can get them in their plastic packaging at places like Toys R Us in Milford. Connecticut.
