A number of top college wrestlers, including two NCAA Division I wrestling champs and a trio of former wrestlers now competing in mixed martial arts, have learned who they will be facing at next Saturday’s Adam Frey Classic, according to line-ups posted at the organization’s Facebook page Friday.
The two NCAA champs are Nick Gwiazdowski, 2014 NCAA heavyweight champ for NC State, and Darrion Caldwell, 2009 NCAA titlewinner for the Wolfpack, who, along with Steve Mytych and Matt Riddle, have competed in MMA. All are slated to compete at the sixth annual fundraising event to be held Saturday, July 12 at Rider University in Trenton, N.J. All proceeds go to the Adam Frey Foundation, a non-profit organization to give comfort to and provide enjoyment for those receiving treatment for cancer.
Gwiazdowski will be taking on A.J. Mott, who wrestles at Grand View University in Iowa… while former NC State champ Caldwell – now competing for Bellator Fighting Championships -- will take on James Fleming, an NCAA All-American from Clarion University. Nahshon Garrett, 2014 NCAA finalist at 125 pounds, will go up against Rob Deutsch of Rider.
Other match-ups include Rick Durso (Franklin & Marshall) vs. B.J. Clagon (Rider); Abram Ayala (Princeton University) vs. Canaan Bethea (University of Pennsylvania); Chad Walsh (Rider) vs. Ray Bethea (Penn); Shane Hughes (Columbia) vs. Casey Kent (Penn); Scott Delveccio (Rutgers) vs. Darian Cruz (Lehigh); Matt Cimato (Drexel) vs. Troy Heilmann (University of North Carolina); Sam Speno (North Carolina State) vs. Randy Cruz (Lehigh); Steve Mytych (Drexel alum) vs. Scott Fejesto (Old Dominion); Richie Lewis (Iowa Central Community College) vs. Tyler Hunt (Rutgers); Matt Riddle (East Stroudsburg University alum, now in MMA) vs. Judd Ziegler (Princeton); Devin Geoghen (Old Dominion) vs. Ken Theibold (Rutgers).
Last year’s event, held at Long Branch High School in New Jersey in mid-June, featured Robert Hamlin, two-time NCAA finalist for Lehigh. Outstanding Wrestler of the event was Robert Deutsch of Rider University.
Adam Frey was a Cornell wrestler who was diagnosed with cancer after the 2008 NCAAs. After a nearly two-year battle – which he shared with the world in his online blog that later became a book -- Frey passed away in late December 2009 at age 23.
According to the website for the event, "The Classic has been modeled in Adam’s vision to not only be an event to see great athletes compete , but also be a festive atmosphere to celebrate Adam’s life and the friendships wrestling has brought to all of us."
