Like clockwork, the surf marched into Matagorda (better known as Gorda) on Sunday. Sunday lived up to its name, putting sun into the day.
The surf seemed to get up and stay up with the sun. The extra hours of daylight illuminated the start of the spring surf season. The gorgeous Gorda sunset painted the days end with peaceful completion.
Sunday, March 10, manifested what Texas surfers have been anticipating… longer daylight hours to get their surf on. For those who work the 9 to 5, numbers count. The extra hours of light can mean an afternoon delight in the form of a power surf session. The spring surf season in Texas means cool water, warm air temperatures, sunshine, and the last hint of surf before summertime approaches.
Amid the excitement of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and music festivals like SXSW, surfers took a Sunday afternoon escape to Gorda. Matagorda got its name from the thick canebrakes that grew by the coast (not the translation fat lady killer). Most of Matagorda is made up of water which also aids in the growth of another familiar sweet coastal species, the Texas surfer. At the mouth of the Colorado River, in the coastal town of Matagorda Bay was the definition of what Texas surfers live for, long Sunday surf sessions.
