'Masters of the Universe' has 2014 release set

Based on Mattel’s action figures, “Masters of the Universe” is coming to theaters for a second adaptation of the story. Gary Goddard tried to bring the story to theaters in 1987, however, it failed miserably.

Masters of the Universe” comes to us from a long line of lore. He-Man was once Prince Adam, a hybrid of an Earthling and an Eternian. At 18-years-old, he was placed in Castle Grayskull, where he obtained his super powers.

The fantasy action film will be in theaters in 2014.

Jon Chu (Never Say Never, Step Up 3D) will be directing the film. He shows enthusiasm about the project, which is always a great sign.

We’re working on the script, to make it better and stronger. We’re designing a bunch of stuff. I learned on “G.I. Joe” that to make it right, you have to do a lot of experimenting first and you have to trust that during the process you’ll find where the tonal line is. It’s so delicate. “Masters of the Universe” means so much to a lot of people out there and myself as well. I don’t want to disappoint my friends! We all grew up with Masters, played with the toys. I had a Castle Grayskull, played with the toys and I had a Battle Cat. We’re just designing now, going too far on some things, pulling back on others. Making it more real or more fantastic. We’re trying to find that line as we go.

It’s going to be a difficult task to find the sense of realism with “Masters of the Universe.” With plenty of beastly villains, supernatural heroes and companions that come from the mind of Mattel’s toy makers, it will be a harder road than with “G.I. Joe.” When asked who he would have appear in the film, Chu had this to add:

A lot of people ask, “Who are you going to cast?” We’re not even there yet. We’re just trying to get the character of the movie down. This is one of the most fun parts, where all the possibilities are open. We’re just playing in the sandbox. Right now, I’m just soaking it all in. Learning, watching, listening, reading a lot. Any blogs that are out there, or people who have opinions. I’m just soaking it in and feeling what the environment is in this world. I know what I personally feel about Masters, but there is something to be said for experiencing what other people experience in the world.

Will “Masters of the Universe” be filmed in 3D? Chu states it’s not always his choice but he loves 3D. It’s all up to Sony as to the film status. Sony does tend to love 3D, however. Several films in 2012 were all filmed in 3D.

Watch for “Masters of the Universe” in theaters in 2014.
