If we could give an award for the world's cutest healthy cooking show, "MasterChef Junior" would win. And the October 18 episode made it clear why the show deserves that award.
Chef Gordon Ramsay, formerly famed for his quick tongue and fondness for swearing, uses his wit mixed with a good dose of kindness to help these young chefs practice their creative cuisine. On the October 18 show, the kids faced a Mystery Box. Its contents were deliberately chosen to teach the kids to appreciate good-for-you food that's not usually thought of as kid-friendly: Liver, Brussels sprouts, sardines and (winning lots of wrinkled noses) blue cheese.
The adorably tiny Sarah sums up the reaction of all the kids: "This is so not gummy bears!" However, she and the other kids persisted, whipping up dishes that would impress the most talented of home chefs (deep-fried kidneys, anyone?).
Chef Gordon offered a helping hand and support where needed, and was obviously charmed when young Alexander announced that he was making a British dish of sticky toffee pudding. He also provided a nice serving of praise when the young chefs utilized the good-for-you foods wisely (bravo Brussels sprouts!), a good lesson in an era where childhood obesity remains a concern.
The other judges on the show are restaurateur and winemaker Joe Bastianich and famed chef Graham Elliot. They are equally charming with the children, softening their feedback and offering encouraging words wherever possible.
For the second part of the show, the children faced an elimination challenge: Bake a cake as fast as you can. When one little girl crumbled into tears as her cake crumbled into bits, Chef Gordon quickly ran to her side and got her started on a second cake.
We love this show for the encouragement that it offers to children and parents to steer clear of that drive through and get cooking together to make creative and tasty dishes - even when there's only liver and Brussels sprouts in the house! Chef Gordon has become famed for his fondness for making healthy dishes that taste fabulous, and he's also authored a new cookbook focused on helping others to follow his lead: "Gordon Ramsay's Healthy Appetite: 125 Super-Fresh Recipes for a High-Energy Life" (click for details).
