Master Sgt. Dan "bud" Wassom II

Five-year-old, Lorelai Wassom, is alive today because her father, Master Sgt. Dan “Bud” Wassom II, used his own body to shield hers when a tornado destroyed the family home Sunday in Vilonia, Ark.

Designated an EF-4, the monster tornado that ripped through Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mississippi took the lives of more than a dozen people. Sadly, Lorelai's daddy was one of them.

The Air Force Times published the words of little Lorelai after her world exploded around her:

"My daddy saved me; the house exploded and my daddy saved me; he's a hero.”

“Bud” Wassom was a 12-year veteran in the Arkansas Air National Guard. College-educated, he had an opportunity to become a pilot, but loved his job as a loadmaster with the 189th Airlift Wing.

From family accounts, Bud Wassom was proud to be an American and was proud of his family’s long military history.

Master Sgt. Wassom is survived by his wife and two daughters.
