On the first few days of March 2013, massive methane releases occurred off the coast of Los Angeles in Santa Monica Bay and in the Kingston area of Jamaica. In both cases, a strong stench was released. In Jamaica, the massive release caused panic and sickened some islanders to the point of requiring hospitalization. The release of methane is often the result of tectonic plate movement.

On Sunday, March 3 in the Santa Monica Bay area of California, a foul odor, possibly the result of a large methane release from the ocean floor, spurred calls to Los Angeles fire departments. The strong stench was smelled inland from the Bay in the Los Angeles area. Hazmat crews detected unusually large concentrations of methane gas in the air.
What are the symptoms of exposure to methane gas?
High levels of methane gas deplete the oxygen level in the body causing difficulty in breathing, and if the oxygen level depletes to less than 12%, unconsciousness and death can result. Symptoms include flu-like symptoms, headaches, nausea and vomiting, heart palpitations, memory loss, inattention, poor judgment, dizziness and blurred vision, lack of motor coordination – bumping into or dropping things, and mental uneasiness and lethargy.
Previously, on Friday, March 1 around 10 a.m., in Kingston, Jamaica, a noxious odor sickened more than 50 islanders, some of whom collapsed and were rushed to a Kingston hospital. The Central Sorting Office (CSO) on South Camp Road was evacuated and the area was plunged into chaos for several hours. Workers from the CSO raised an alarm after several colleagues complained of difficulty breathing and collapsed, panicking their coworkers. A medical official at the hospital, who asked not to be named, said a large group of people were suffering from dizzy spells and respiratory problems.

In September 2012, explosive methane gas was found in more than 200 wells in New York State. In 2 percent of wells, methane levels were so high that the gas had to be vented to avoid potential detonation. In October 2012, methane leaks were detected in Assumption Parish, Bayou Corne, Louisiana, in the sinkhole area. As methane leaks spread throughout the area, sites bubbling methane increased. Foul odors were experienced causing nausea and a burning sensation
