It may not have started as comedy, but "Star Wars Uncut" looks hilarious. (photo: credit below)
Here's the story thus far: someone decided that a really, really complicated and cool project would be to chop up "Star Wars" into 15 second clips and "assign" those clips to people all over the world. Whatever 15 seconds' worth of footage you received, that's 15 seconds worth of footage you needed to recreate-- in whatever form you'd choose-- and then all of the little snippets of footage would be pieced back together. In theory, the end result would be the largest-scale remake of a single film...uh, ever. Read on for more details and to watch the example-footage below, my gentle Examiner readers...
The concept is unbelievable, but even more unbelievable is that it's actually coming together. This whole project was announced months ago, and now-- to our utter amusement-- they've got a trailer for the resulting film. It's gotta be the funniest, most applause-worthy trailer we've seen in a long, long time. Before we get any further into discussing what's going on here, check it out:

So, thoughts: Think about how many people this thing involved. Check out all those different formats! Did you see the "Big Lebowski" version of a scene crammed in there? You could pick through this trailer for hours and find new, funny little things indefinitely. We don't know if this counts as "comedy", but damnit if it didn't have the Comedy Examiner laughing with delight (an emotion that is foreign, strange, and unappealing to him, but will be allowed for the duration of this trailer). You'd have to be the world's biggest toolbox to not find this clip totally inspiring, amusing, and worth a fifteenth look.
You can head on over to "Star Wars Uncut" to contribute your own little snippet's worth of footage to this massive undertaking. We don't know if everyone was encouraged to make their entries on the "funny" side, but from the looks of things (see below), the final product will end up being a loving, intricately-detailed parody of the original film. Could you call it a "parody"? Well, probably not. They may have to invent a new word for something this cool. There are 472 (at the time of this writing) 15-second snippets' worth of footage left to be recreated by someone-- maybe you-- so head on over to the site if you want to contribute.
Here's another scene, from the early in the film where Luke Skywalker has come home to find his family killed and the Empire hot on his tail:

To give you an idea of some of the other extremely-different-than-the-original formats that some of the "directors" are taking in their approach to the footage, here's the scene after Han, Luke, Chewie, and C3P0 have busted Leiah out of the Death Star's holding cells and are headed back to the Millenium Falcon (or, as its friends call it, the "Aluminum Falcon"):
Star Wars Uncut - Scene 342 from David Morris on Vimeo.
The next scene was apparently contributed by the produce manager at the local Super Wal-Mart:
Star Wars Uncut - Scene 386 from Phil Rice on Vimeo.
Getting the picture? Again, head on over to "Star Wars: Uncut" to see the rest of the completed scenes in action. Not all of them are funny, but many of them are (or were made by people who clearly had a sense of humor about this enterprise, something Lucas might wanna look into if he's gonna keep making movies; this trailer was better than any of the prequels, and yes, I'm counting "Revenge of The Sith"), and even if they aren't it's impossible not to appreciate the amazing amount of time, effort, and care that's gone into this project so far. What are you waiting for? Go now!
