After being let go in November just after the end of the season, Spencer Massey is reuniting with Don Schumacher Racing in the Top Fuel division after full-time funding was received from Schumacher Electric Corp. Massey’s team will be led by crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler.
The move returns DSR to a seven-car team, with Top Fuel dragsters for 2012 champ Antron Brown, seven-time champ Tony Schumacher and Massey; 2012 Funny Car champ Jack Beckman, 2011 Funny Car champ Matt Hagan, Ron Capps and Johnny Gray round out the Funny Car side.
“I committed last summer to running this team in 2013 after Honeywell sold the FRAM/Prestone business to an investor and the decision of the new owner was to eliminate motorsports sponsorship,” said Schumacher in a statement. “I committed to run that car in 2013 and will do what I committed to doing. And I want to keep that team together because it has contended for the championship down to the last two races the past two years.”
Schumacher Electric, under the banner of Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher, will fully fund the DSR team while Schumacher continues to search for another major sponsor.
“Were we not to field that team it also would have cost about 10 guys their jobs, and I didn’t want that to happen,” said Schumacher.
