Colleen Ritzer of Andover, Massachusetts – a 24-year-old Danvers High School teacher – was found dead in the woods behind the school, according to a Fox News report on Wednesday. One of her math students, Chris Chism, 14, has been arrested in relation to the crime. During the investigation of the murder, the city officials have closed all public schools in Danver, Massachusetts.
The investigation began when Ritzer didn’t return home from work and was not answering her cellphone, according to the Essex district attorney. Based on that missing person's information, blood was found in a second floor bathroom at the school and soon thereafter Ritzer’s body was found in the woods. A video at the school shows Chism taking Ritzer's body from a second floor faculty washroom in the school to the woods in a recycle bin.
The teenager who faced arraignment on Wednesday, did not go home Tuesday night and was discovered wandering along a highway by Topsfield police shortly after midnight on Wednesday. He reportedly went to a movie after the crime.
Thus far, Chism has pleaded no guilty, and the judge in the case approved a motion for a mental evaluation of the young man.
UPDATE (10/25/2013): According to the New York Daily News, students reported that Ritzer asked Chism to stay after class - at the end of the school day - to help him prepare for a pending math test. During the tutoring, she apparently excused herself to go to the washroom. Via security cameras, Chism could be seen stalking her as she went to the washroom. Evidence shows that he slashed her with a box cutter, cutting her throat. He then took her body in a recycle bin to the woods behind the school and put leaves over her. He then changed out of his bloody clothes into fresh clothing he had in his backpack. Taking off with Ritzer's credit card, he went to a movie and charged food at a Wendy's fast food restaurant.
