Massachusetts Marine killed in combat in Helmand Province

On Christmas Eve, the Pentagon announced the worst possible news to the family of Marine Sgt. Daniel M. Vasselian.

Sgt. Vasselian, 27, of Abington, Mass., was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, fighting the Global War on Terror.

There was no information regarding other Marines who might have been injured in the Dec. 23, incident.

Assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Sgt. Vasselian was based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

The family has not released information regarding services for their Marine.
