Honored for their “exceptional achievements” in creating inventions that have made a “tangible impact on (the) quality of life,” 12 Massachusetts-based academic leaders have been added to a list of the 101 top scientists, innovators and leaders named as the 2012 Charter Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).
Unveiled this week, the list includes innovators who “have made a tangible impact on the quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society,” according to NAI officials. The charter members of the NAI will be inducted during the organizations second annual conference on February 22 at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
The list of scientists and innovators from Massachusetts includes four from Boston University and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and two each from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

- Craig C. Mello, University of Massachusetts Medical Center
- Theodore D. Moustakas, Boston University
- Jack W. Szostak, Harvard University
- John E. Ware, Jr., University of Massachusetts Medical Center
In all, the inaugural list includes representatives from 56 research universities and non-profit research institutes in the U.S. and around the world. All members of the inaugural class hold patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) which total more than 3,200 patents.
"The NAI is a breakthrough for our country,” said USPTO Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director David Kappos at the first conference. “It couldn't be more timely to have an organization like this to be championing innovation."
The list includes eight Nobel Laureates, 14 research university and non-profit research institute presidents, 53 National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine members; 11 National Inventors Hall of Fame inductees, two Royal Society Fellows, five National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipients, four National Medal of Science recipients and 31 AAAS Fellows, as well as other award holders.
The NAI is a non-profit organization comprised of 45 national and international universities and research institutes and more than 2,000 individual members.
