Trilogies have a certain arc to them that almost requires the second story to be dark and foreboding before the heroes eventually triumph happily in the third story. The Star Wars films Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi are classic examples of this. Mass Effect is not necessarily known for its levity but BioWare, the makers of the game, promise a 'fun and lighter' experience for Mass Effect 3.
"[W]e're not talking too much about Mass Effect 3 right now, but the second story in a trilogy is where you traditionally end up in a fairly dark place. The third story is where you try and bring some fun and lightness back into it," explained director Casey Hudson in an interview with OXM UK.
"One thing we tried to do with Mass Effect 2 was as well as bringing in the more mature stuff, we also tried to bring in a lot more humour so that we can go to these places without making it an overbearing experience. I think we have a lot more fun this time through characters like Joker and EDI. Mass Effect 3 is going to be the epic conclusion... so, a lot more darkness but also a lot more humour."
We are going to assume that the humor does not mean the addition of anything like Ewoks.
Mass Effect 3 is also rumored to add co-op multiplayer but no additional details are known at this time.

Based on the ending to ME2, it has to get a lot darker before it gets lighter.
