Tammy Maria Curtis of St. Mary's County was charged with three counts of animal cruelty on Sunday, after she allegedly threw three very young puppies into a nearby dumpster because she had an argument with the dogs' owner reported wjla.com.
Curtis and the owner of the Yorkshire terriers were in a dispute over rent payments at the Indian Bridge Apartments. When the dogs' owner returned, Curtis allegedly claimed she had killed the puppies and would not reveal where they were.
According to SoMdNews, the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and a local firefighter unit recovered the puppies after another neighbor heard soft crying noises from a trash bin in the back of the apartments. The puppies, born on April 24, had been stuffed into a white trash bag and thrown into the dumpster. Sheriff's Sgt. Cara Grumbles stated the puppies initially had trouble breathing, but had been returned:
“They were given back to the victim, their owner, and she put them back with the [mother] dog. Last thing we heard, they were fine.”
On Monday, Curtis was released from St. Mary's County Detention Center and will appear in court at a later date.
