Maryland mourning dove season to begin September 1, 2010

September is two weeks away, that must mean so is the beginning of dove season. Maryland mourning dove season begins September 1, with the first split ending on October 9. The season reopens November 13 through November 26 and lastly December 16 through January 1.

The bag limit remains at 15 birds since being raised last year.

During the first split of the season the hunting hours are noon to sunset. During the remaining segments of the season the hunting hours are one half hour before sunrise to sunset.

Do not forget to get your HIP permit when ordering your license on line. All migratory bird hunters including landowners, who are license-exempt, are required to obtain the free Maryland Migratory Game Bird Stamp/HIP Permit. Hunters must possess the printed receipt showing proof of purchase of the Maryland Migratory Game Bird Stamp while hunting migratory game birds.

“Despite the heavy snows this past winter, dove surveys conducted this spring did not show much change from recent years,” said DNR Game Bird Section Leader Bill Harvey. “The warm, dry spring and summer were favorable for dove nesting and we expect hunters will find good numbers of doves this fall.”

Don’t have a farm to dove hunt? Try one of the MD DNR dove fields. These areas are managed by the DNR Wildlife and Heritage Service to provide food and cover for doves and other wildlife and are open to the public for dove hunting. Certain restrictions apply when hunting these areas so be sure to check the regulations. Some require a permit to hunt. While others are open on a first-come basis.
