Maryland lawmakers considering options for attracting cybersecurity workforce

A taskforce is working to find ways to help the state meet growing demand for cybersecurity workers, according to an article in yesterday’s Washington Post. The taskforce, led by William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland, and Robert Hannon, former head of the Anne Arundel County Economic Development Corporation, is set to submit its recommendations soon, according to Maryland House Speaker Michael E. Busch. State lawmakers approved a tax credit for the cybersecurity industry last year, and among the ideas being considered is further expanding that tax credit. Kirwan has stated that the state will not be able to find enough people in undergraduate/graduate programs to meet the current demand for jobs in the sector.

What types of skills are necessary for a successful career in the cybersecurity industry? Dice.com details some of the critical skills in this article. Among the most important skills on the list:

· A solid foundation of technology skills, which may include an understanding of network architecture and programming;

· An interest in examining technical issues from all sides;

· Strong analytical and diagnostic skills;

· Excellent presentation skills;

· Ability to clearly articulate complex concepts to a variety of audiences both verbally and in writing.
