The 2013 Maryland General Assembly is addressing some seriously needed cancer issues. Hearings are being scheduled. Work groups have been formed to look at some of these bills. All Marylanders are asked to review the Legislative Bill Index to note bills of interest. Then, get involved!

Cindy Carter, CEO and Co-Founder of the Cancer Support Foundation, has been working diligently for months to bring two bills before the legislature. With great support from several delegates, Carter's hard work is paying off. Two bills she has championed have been introduced.

There is HB1137 that will look at changes to Social Services to aid cancer patients. HB0955 will be looking at Temporary Disability Benefits for patients with cancer and other debilitating conditions who expect to return to work within period of time. (House of Delegate bills are identified as HB and their assigned numbers.). There is also another bill about Palliative Care that had a hearing last week

It is urgent that cancer advocates contact their legislators and the committees who will be hosting the hearings on these bills. Grassroots advocacy makes a world of difference -- has a positive impact on getting the delegates to first pass a bill out of committee and second pass the bill on a floor vote. Your phone call or email to a delegate will make a difference. Tell them what these bills will mean to you or to other cancer patients.

This grassroots effort is extremely important as the legislators focus on other hot topics like gun control and tax increases. Remind them that cancer patients need these bills passed this year to help save lives!
