The 2013 Grammy Nominations Concert took place on Dec. 6 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, and was televised in the U.S. on CBS. Several of the artists who performed or were presenters at the event were also announced as nominees for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, which will be held on January 26, 2014, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Here is what this Grammy Nominations Concert entertainer said backstage in the press room.

MARY LAMBERT

Nominated for:
Album of the Year: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, “The Heist” (featured artist)
Song of the Year: “Same Love,” performed with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Can you talk about your Kickstarter contest?

Two years ago, I was fundraising for an album. I was at Kickstarter, and one of the awards, if someone donated $1,000, was I would take [the winner] as my plus-one at the Grammys. And it was a real thing! And no one donated $1,000.

And I put on there that it could be next year, it could be five years, but I’m going to the Grammys. And then two years later, it’s kind of crazy! I’m not a bartender anymore. I can still bartend. I’ll make you a cocktail. I got two nominations. I’m going to start crying.

If you win any Grammys, where you would put them?

I don’t know. Where do you think I should put them? I think I would probably not put them in the bathroom, probably not in the closet. I don’t know. Take them out of the closet! It’s terrible!

What’s next for you?

I just signed to Capitol Records, and I’m releasing my version of the song “She Keeps Me Warm,” so it will hit radio, and hopefully I’ll be back here.

What will your version of “She Keeps Me Warm” sound like?

It’s the side of “Same Love” that is purely just about love. It’s more of the heart of it. “Same Love” was great because it was just the head and the heart. And Ben [Haggerty, also known as Macklemore, co-writer of the song] really hit the pragmatic, rational side of it. And I wanted to complement the heart and the love.

So “She Keeps Me Warm” is purely a love song, no political mind. I guess being gay is inherently political, whether you want it to be or not. I’m just excited for it to come out.
