In an age when the United States school children are steadily falling behind other countries when it comes to science and math, NASA has recruited a popular R&B singer to try and help promote the idea that science is cool, especially to girls.
Mary J. Blige, better known for her hit songs, is now teaming up with NASA to help encourage girls to become more interested in science and math. The rather unusual partnership comes via Blige's charity Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN) and NASA's Summer of Innovation program. The goal: help bring science and math to inner city middle school students in New York City with the assistance of cooperating universities.
Recently, Blige and NASA astronaut Leland Melvin teamed up to create a video for NASA's Youtube channel. The hope is that Blige, who will undoubtedly be familiar to the target students, can help bring attention to NASA's program of encouraging students to get more involved with science and math, which can help lead to a career in NASA itself.
