“O my dove in the clefts of the rock,
in the secret recesses of the cliff,
Let me see you,
let me hear your voice,
For your voice is sweet,
and you are lovely.” Song of Songs 2:8-14
Consumerist Christmas will never deliver intimacy with Jesus Christ, the only Lover who will not jilt us when we aren't perfect. Faith is the only present presented to us as a gift, and an invitation, to intimacy in the Life of God. Everything has a price that is purely natural. Faith, however, presents us with the priceless gift of genuine Love.
"Our soul waits for the LORD,
who is our help and our shield,
For in him our hearts rejoice;
in his holy name we trust." Psalm 33: 2-3, 11-12, 20-21
Faith is the key that unlocks the help of our soul, the shield of our hope, Jesus Christ. Faith introduces us to prayer, which is conversation with God; faith introduces us to the Sacraments, bringing healing from, and unity with, Christ; faith brings life's true meaning, both in suffering and in sacrifice--opening all events and circumstances as opportunities for both grace and joy.
"Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.” Luke 1:39-45
Ultimately, faith opens us up to the power of saying 'yes!' Mary's yes introduces us to faith, not as an abstract knowledge, but as a living, breathing, relationship experience. We too can experience Mary's 'yes' of faith.
It is as simple as a heartfelt 'yes,' right now. Blessed are we who believe.
