You guys ready for some strange news?
With San Diego Comic-Con underway, the casting rumor mill is heating up. Marvel Studios will present tomorrow at Hall H, and they are sure to have some major announcements regarding their films.
The report also adds that Jared Leto, hot off his Oscar winning performance in “Dallas Buyers Club,” and Justin Theroux (“The Leftovers”) are also in the running for the highly coveted role. It is said Leto wants to focus on directing and Theroux is committed to "The Leftovers."
The report adds that although Phoenix may not be interested in being tied up in those lengthy Marvel contracts, that there is a possibility the studio may not have him sign one of those deals with an infinite amount of studio options.
This is not the first time Phoenix has been sought for a lead role in a comic book film.
Back in December of last year, Variety reported the actor was sought for the role of Lex Luthor in “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” The role eventually went to Jesse Eisenberg (“Now You See Me”).
If Phoenix takes the role of Strange, he’ll be heading one of Marvel’s riskiest endeavors.
“Doctor Strange” follows gifted neurosurgeon Stephen Strange who becomes the Sorcerer Supreme tasked with defending earth from the supernatural.
This would be the first film in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe that would dip into the world of the supernatural.
Scott Derrickson (“Sinister”) will helm the project.
No official release date has announced, however, it is safe to assume that one of Marvel’s recently announced release dates is reserved for “Doctor Strange.”
