“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” is the new action-based TV show by “Avengers” director Joss Whedon. According to MTV.com on Oct. 7, there is one real world volunteer group that has a problem with one of the show’s bad guys.
One of the heroes on the show is named Skye and before joining up to help SHIELD, she was part of a hacker group called the Rising Tide. This group is similar to the real world group Anonymous, a hacker associate that tries to release real information to the public.
However, there is another real world group called The Rising Tide who wants Marvel to stop using the name for the hacker group. The real Rising Tide is a volunteer group who tries to raise awareness of climate change issues and has members on four different continents.
While The Rising Tide on the show is an antagonistic group of hackers, they aren’t yet actual villains, but there is a chance that changes in the future as it has been hinted it is much larger than it seemed in the beginning.
The Rising Tide group says that Joss Whedon used not only their name, but a logo similar to theirs for the show’s “villains” and that they consider it a humiliating blow. They also say it was insulting to not only be depicted as villains but to have one of their own switch sides to join a “police state.”
It seems that the real Rising Tide organization is having a hard time separating fact from fiction here.
