On the heels of ABC’s full season pick-up of the series comes the first promo for Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”, the television spin-off of the blockbuster Avengers movie. The pilot was written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tanchearon, and directed by Joss. The series follows Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as he leads a small team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents handling strange new cases.
It’s expected that the Avengers will be deep in the background, caught up in their own movie-sized adventures and too busy to get in on the action here, although Cobie Smulders, who played Agent Maria Hill in the film, said that her commitment to “How I Met Your Mother” would not prevent her from reprising her role on the show.
There are no specific signs of pending Marvel characters in the promo, but we do get a quick flash of J. August Richards (from Whedon’s “Angel”) as some sort of super-powered character. Although Whedon confirmed at SXSW that Agent Coulson would be returning to headline the series, there’s still no word on how he survived his fatal stabbing in The Avengers (and given his temperament in the promo, it’s definitely not a Life Model Decoy).
The series also stars Ming-Na, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, and Elizabeth Henstridge, and is set to premiere in September on ABC.
