In Amazing Spider-Man #700, which was released yesterday December 26th, Marvel Entertainment did the unthinkable again. Peter Parker is dead.
In a post-Christmas shocker, longtime and terminally ill Spider-Man villain Doctor Octopus, the one aptly portrayed by Alfred Molina in "Spider-Man 2", managed to outwit Peter Parker by switching bodies with him and trapping him in his dying body.
While Marvel did kill off Peter Parker before in last year's issue of Ultimate Spider-Man #160, that was in a different Marvel Universe - Marvel Ultimate Universe aka Earth-1610. In that universe, another hero, Miles Morales, takes up the role of Spider-Man after Peter Parker died fighting The Green Goblin. This death is completely different in that it takes place in Marvel's current continuity and not some alternate universe.
But, the death of Peter Parker does not mean the death of Spider-Man. In an even more surprising twist, the villainous Otto Gunther Octavius decides to take his second chance at life by being a better Spider-Man than Peter Parker ever was. Dan Slott, one of the writers and masterminds behind this plot added that, "This is Moriarty in the head of Sherlock. This is Prince John inside of Robin Hood. This is the greatest villain inside the body of the greatest hero and trying to do good."
I have to admit that it's an interesting twist as it'll be strange to root for such a dastardly fellow who killed off one of the greatest superheroes of all time. Regardless, with such an epic story of redemption, it would be hard not to follow and read along on what new adventures await this "new" Spider-Man.
The adventures of this "new" Spider-Man will debut in next month's Superior Spider-Man #1. Writer Dan Slott will move from Amazing Spider-man to Superior Spider-Man. Artists Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos, and Giuseppe Camuncoli will be supplying the art.
