On Wednesday, March 12 Comingsoon.net posted the news that Marvel Studios is developing a new standalone film for the character of Black Widow. The character, portrayed by actress Scarlett Johansson, has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff since "Iron Man 2" was released in 2010.
The news comes just a few weeks before the release of the highly anticipated sequel "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" which will feature the character of Black Widow in a major role. At a press conference for the upcoming film, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed that they have "various outlines and ideas" about what a solo film for the character would include. With upcoming superhero film planned for the next several years, the solo film is really just a matter of when not if.
Black Widow was featured in "The Avengers" in 2012 and is an important part of each film for plot development since all of the films in the cinematic universe are connected to each other. Johansson is currently preparing to film "Avengers: Age of Ultron" with stunt training and rehearsals. Filming is expected to begin in three weeks around the globe.
Johansson recently announced she is pregnant with her first child, but the news will not cause delays or affect schedules for filming as Black Widow. A standalone film is still in development, since much of her character development will be featured in the upcoming releases, but Johansson is on board to appear as Black Widow in the future.
