Marvel Comics news: "Amazing Spider-Man 2", FF, and "Iron Man 3" film updates

A smattering of Marvel Comics related news for February 24th - 26th, 2013!

First image of Sony's "Amazing Spider-Man 2" hits the web!

As revealed by Marvel's own website, the first image for the second in the Marc Webb directed series of Spider-Man films for Sony has hit the web, and as usual it shows the costumed web-slinger himself. The most notable thing here is how accurate the suit appears to be compared to the original comic book; in four previous films, the eyes of the mask have never looked this dead on. It certainly is closer to the classic style than the suit of the previous "Amazing Spider-Man", and seems to herald back to the design of the Sam Raimi trilogy from 2002-2007.

"Amazing Spider-Man 2" hits theaters May 2nd, 2014 in traditional and 3D formats and will once again feature Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. The film will also feature Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, Shailane Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, and Jamie Foxx as Electro. Paul Giamatti is rumored to be playing Alex O'Hirn/The Rhino as well. Considering that the last Spider-Man costume was intended to be the initial suit by an inexperienced hero, perhaps a more refined suit in a sequel makes sense. Then again, it remains to be seen what the lower torso and boots of the suit will look like.

More vague Marvel NOW! teasers!

As has become tradition, before the solicitations for a month begin, Marvel issues vague teaser images of upcoming launches. The first simply reads "of the dead" and claims to ship in "Fall 2013"; no creative team is known, although Twitchfilm noted a previous interview about zombie film master George A. Romero writing a comic for Marvel. It could be another installment of the "Marvel Zombies" franchise, which never seems to end. The second teaser simply shows the image of a number one with the word, "first". The number is comprised of the names of various Marvel characters from Spider-Man to Doop. It is unknown whether this will be a particular story or another wave of fresh #1 issues; Marvel seems to issue more "renumberings" than seasons in the year.

Fox's Fantastic Four reboot film on track!

Deadline has reported that Matthew Vaughan, who directed "X-Men: First Class" in 2011, will produce a new "Fantastic Four" film to reboot their series. The film is still set to be directed by Josh Track ("Chronicle") from a script written by Jeremy Slater. Last year, a rumor surfaced that Fox was haggling with Marvel Entertainment (and thus Disney) about extending their film deadline to maintain the Fantastic Four license; Fox's last film with the Four was in 2007. This new film is scheduled for release on March 6th, 2015; a few months before "The Avengers 2" by Marvel Studios.

Latest "Iron Man 3" posters!

With "Iron Man 3" set to debut in theaters May 3rd, Marvel Studios continues to issue more promotional posters. The latest includes Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin and Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts. Empire magazine has also includes a new image as Robert Downy Jr. as Iron Man/Tony Stark. While "Iron Man 2" was a commercial success, it wasn't as well received as the first from 2008 and also served as a stepping stone for last year's "The Avengers"; it will remain to be seen if this second sequel reclaims the magic of 2008.
