Marvel Comics news 1/2/13: Guardians of the Galaxy and Capt. America rumors

- As one year ended and another has begun, rumors have swirled around who will star as Peter Quill/Star-Lord in "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY", which will debut on August 1st, 2014. Just last week, Variety claimed that the role was down to Zachary Levi and Jim Sturgess from a list of some ten potential actors for the coveted role. This week, director James Gunn went to Twitter to call out writers for Variety and IGN claiming their rumors regarding the casting for that role "was/is inaccurate". This led to an internet verbal spat between Gunn and Variety writer Jeff Sneider, and Gunn wound up deleting his posts from Twitter. This could naturally mean someone at Marvel told Gunn to keep a lid on it, or it was considered distracting press.

Deadline, however, has chosen to add onto this rumor mill by adding another name to it - Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is fresh off a key role in Chris Nolan's "THE DARK KNIGHT RISES". The gossip column claims he's "in the mix" for the role, joining other actors claimed to have taken part in screen tests which even include James Marsden, who is set to reprise his role as Cyclops in Fox's "X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST". At the end of November, JGL was rumored as appearing as Batman in a potential Justice League film. It certainly is interesting what place JBL has found himself after appearing in a hit superhero film.

Naturally, the version of the Guardians of the Galaxy appearing in the film are the second incarnation as written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning from 2008-2010, and not the original version which debuted in 1969. It features Peter Quill/Star-Lord leading a team of space heroes which include Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer. It is perhaps the riskiest of the upcoming Marvel Studios' projects aside for "ANT-MAN".

- Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter in "CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER" in 2011 has confirmed that she won't be appearing in the sequel, 2014's "CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER". This confirms that the action takes place in the modern day for the sequel, taking place after "THE AVENGERS". The female lead for the film is expected to be Sharon Carter, Peggy's niece, with some five actresses vying for the role. It will be interesting to see how audiences respond to the borderline creepy detail of Cap/Steve Rogers dating the niece of his old WWII sweet-heart; back in the 1960's, Sharon was originally Peggy's "little sister". The current comics get around it by not mentioning it very often.
