Howard Stern's perpetual charity case Jackie "The Jokeman" Martling aired a bit of historic Howard Stern Show dirty laundry for Sirius XM radio hosts 'Opie and Anthony' this week. Jackie Martling gave Opie and Anthony an intimate description of the contract negotiations that ultimately caused him to walk away from one of the most coveted gigs in comedy.
Howard Stern agrees to be roasted before retirement
Martilng told Opie and Anthony:
"Everybody knows how much I screamed and yelled and bitched and walked out on the show to try to make more money. If I hadn't of screamed and yelled all these times, I would have never gotten into the ballpark where I was making decent money, so I didn't make a lot of money for 15 years. I made a lot of money for two years."
Jackie Martling admitted that he thought his leverage on the Howard Stern Show could earn him a $100,000 per year raise from general manager Tom Chiusano when the show was still on terrestrial radio.
"I was making 300 grand and they offered me a ten percent raise and I said I don't want a 10% raise, and Tom Chiusano said: 'How much do you want?' and I said '$100,000' and he fell off the chair." Martling then went on to explain the complicated math that brought him to the conclusion that he could squeeze an extra six figures per year out of the Howard Stern Show franchise:
"I knew that the smallest affilate was a quarter million dollars. I thought to myself $10,000 per affilate. That's 1/25. I'm 125 of the Howard Stern Show I think...I drew a line in the sand for myself and I said if I can't make $400,000 I'm leaving, and I left."
Martling left the Howard Stern Show over contract negotiations in 2001 and was replaced by Artie Lange.
Martling makes bid for Artie Lange's job
After unsuccessfully trying to survive as a comedian without the Howard Stern Show platform, Martling eventually returned to the King of All Media to ask for work. Howard Stern granted Martling his own spinoff show on Sirius Howard 101 called "Jackie's Joke Hunt".
Jackie Martling won't be sitting in for Artie Lange
"If I wasn't out of money, I'd have the greatest life in the world," Jackie Martling told Opie and Anthony. "That Stern money'll last forever. You know what today is? Forever."

F Jackie. He should go get a gig with O&A.
I'm sure Howie's crying to Mel right now.
How much do you think Howie will get in his next contract?
all these years later and jackie is still just as clueless. pathetic.
Hey O and A is finally getting a little bit of publicity. Too bad they had to have a Stern show castoff talk about the Stern show for the papers to pick up on it. I like O & A a lot(well I like Anthony and Jimmy) but they will never ever be as popular or entertaining as Howard. They have their moments and its a good show but Howard is a legend. I love how O & A fans say that Howard stopped trying years ago. How do you stop trying on the radio. He goes over topical stuff on the radio just like every other radio guy. Howard just does it better. "He only works 4 days a week". I would love Howard 5 days a week but ill take him for 4. He has been in the business for 30 years and has enough pull to get what he wants. If I could get a 3 day weekend I would do the same thing
Jackie and Howard are lost without each other. You need Batman and the Joker together!
Howard has been horrible since Jackie left. Artie destroyed the show with his pathos. Opie, Anthony and Jimmy put on a very funny show; and it doesn't end there. Fans are updated constantly via their Twitter ramblings. Jimmy and Anthony are constantly going on Fox's Red Eye or the other talk shows. Howard is an old yenta that needs to retire.
It's funny. Anytime they have a Howard regular, the Howard regular always outshines O&A. Says a lot of the caliber of their 'not so' greatness.
I think what you idiots are missing is, Jackie was nothing but complimentary towards Howard. His problems were with Tom Chiusano and the people who signed his paycheck, not Howard, who he acknowledged did everything he could to help Jackie.
And as for Jackie "outshining O&A" and thus proving how bad they are, that's what competent interviewers do, they let the subject shine, they bring out the best in those being interviewed and make them look good. They don't make them uncomfortable with who-gives-a-f**k questions about their sex life and they don't make the interview about themselves (not that O&A don't do that at times).
hey now !
stern rules
o+a suck
jackie crossed the line by doing their show
feel better soon artie
The Stern show really deteriorated since Jackie left. That obese, bipolar, drug addict never knew when to shut up and talked about his sad life constantly. He would interrupt interesting guests, cut Howard off and generally dragged the show down. I hope he never returns to the show. Howard should re-hire Jackie.
Jackie is half the man lil Jimmy is....
Please artiemake sure it works next time...Pathetic fuck stop sceaaming for attention and quit using drugs. Stern was great in his day but now that he is a rich uptight asshole who wants to rub his huge jew nose with other blue bloods it's time to let O&A off the leash. They're funnier, more accessable, and moving with the times all while being way moreinteractive then jew nose ever was. O&A party rock!!!!!!!!!
