Martino to return as Paraguay coach?

There is a great deal of talk coming out of Paraguay regarding the return of Gerardo Martino to the national team there. The former FC Barcelona boss was talked about after a report from Paraguayan publication d10.com informed that president Horacio Cartes would meet with the Argentine coach to convince him to return to to be the boss of the Albirroja. The meeting would be taking place reportedly this coming weekend in Spain while the Champions League final between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid takes place in Lisbon's Estadio Da Luz.

Martino was also being speculated as a possible candidate for the Spurs job that was vacated after the sacking of Tim Sherwood after six months in charge.

During his time as coach of Paraguay, Martino was able to lead the guaranís to the quarterfinals of the World Cup in 2010, before succumbing to the eventual champs Spain. He also led them to a finals appearance in the 2011 Copa América. That would be the first time Paraguay were in a final of that tournament since they won the title in 1979.

Martino was also responsible for helping Newell's Old Boys win their first league title in nine years in 2013 as well as get to the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores for the first time in 20 years.

Paraguay, who did not qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1994, are currently managed by Víctor Genes and are preparing for their friendly matches against Cameroon at Kufstein-Arena in Austria on May 29th and then against France on two days later at the Allianz-Riviera in Nice. Genes has been national team care taker coach for the past year since replacing Gerardo Pelusso.

There have been other candidates looked at as possible national team coaches but the immediate availability of Martino made many in Paraguay gravitate towards a possible return for the coach that led them to their last World Cup.
