Tennis great Martina Navratilova is fighting a breast cancer battle, after being handed the diagnosis in February, following a routine mammogram. The specific form of cancer, carcinoma in situ (DCIS), was caught before spreading to her lymph nodes.
People Magazine reports that Navratilova cried after hearing the news, and revealed her response to the news,
It knocked me on my ass, really. I feel so in control of my life and my body, and then this comes, and it's completely out of my hands.
Beginning in May, the tennis legend will undergo radiation treatments for the disease. The cancer is said to be an aggressive form, but only one-percent of the women diagnosed with this form of the disease, will die from it.
Navratilova admittedly neglected to have a regular yearly mammogram, and had allowed four years to lapse before seeking the current x-ray.
