After much deliberation, bestselling author Joe Nesbo has officially signed off on The Snowman -- giving Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese (The Departed, Taxi Driver) approval to bring police character Harry Hole to film.

The 7th installment in a series of 9 Oslo-based, police-crime thrillers, THR reports that Scorsese will be working with British production company Working Title, whose success with Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (starring Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth ) has sparked worldwide interest in Scandanavian crime drama.

Selling well over a million and a half books in Norway, Nesbo’s work has been translated into over 40 languages.

First published in 1997, the Harry Hole detective series consists of books: "The Bat Man," "The Cockroaches," "The Redbreast," "Nemesis," The Devil’s Star," "The Redeemer," "The Snowman," "The Leopard," and 2011’s "The Ghost."

So far it is unclear whether there is any intention to bring other Harry Hole adventures to the big screen – and “Hole” may have to wait until 2014 before making his screen debut in theatres.

Meanwhile, Scorsese’s family drama Hugo, set in 1920’s Paris, hits theaters next week (11/23/11), starring Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Nanny McPhee), Chloe Grace Moretz (500 Days of Summer), and Christophe Lee (The Lord of the Rings, Dracula: The Prince of Darkness, The Curse of Frankenstein)

Other Scorsese films in the works include drama La tercera orilla (to hit theaters in Jan. 2012), as well as Sinatra (starring Leonardo DiCaprio) and adventure/biopic The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, set for release in 2013.

Did you know? In addition to being an award winning author and former stockbroker, Joe Nesbo is lead singer and songwriter for Norwegian rock band Di Derre.
