Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr believed in freedom and justice for all, and January 21, 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the federal holiday to observe the dream that he shared publicly when he was alive. Get connected with your community as the city marks the holiday through many opportunities to make a difference and get involved:
- From 10-3p at Four Seasons at 410 Four Seasons Town Center, The Volunteer Center is looking for people to join in as event management (from participant registration, hospitality, etc), performances (singers, dancers, poets, etc.) on the day of in honor of MLK, nonprofits & volunteer projects that can be completed on site.
- The Greensboro Aquatic Center has their annual January Jump Start Meet on January 18 until 21 and volunteers are needed.
- Harris Teeter on 2639 Lawndale Drive is hosting Senior Resources of Guilford's Foster Grandparents Program and Retired & Senior Volunteer Program in collecting non-perishable items to replenish the food pantry at The Servant Center as they provide services to homeless and disabled veterans in Guilford County. Stop by to visit them on January 19 from 10 until 3p to drop off some items.
- The Bell House is an unique residential setting for adults with orthoneurological disabilities. Senior Resources of Guilford's Retired & Senior Volunteer Program is creating care packages for the residents. While veterans at the Servant Center will be participating by assembling and delivering the Care Packages, more items (to include but not limited to shampoo/conditioner, body wash, lotion, body spray, sunscreen, body powder, and other toiletry items) are needed. The Senior Resources of Guilford at 301 E. Washington Street is collecting until Friday, January 18.
These are just a few things that are happening MLK Weekend; there are certainly more. What part will you play?
