Martin Luther King Day celebrates the civil rights leader with special programs

To commemorate civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Jan. 20, 2014 when schools, banks and government agencies will be closed, you can look for a service project where you are giving time and energy back to the community or you can join with others at one of the Chicago area’s celebrations.

The commemorative holiday, the third Monday of January, became official Nov. 2, 1983 under President Ronald Reagan and first observed Jan. 20, 1986. To learn more about King visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, in Atlanta, established in 1968 by Coretta Scott King.

Events listed are all Monday, Jan. 20, 2014. They range from the Chicago History Museum and the Du Sable Museum of African American History to the Chicago Sinfonietta at Symphony Center and the Wheaton Christian Center in Carol Stream.

The Chicago History Museum celebrates from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with family activities, crafts, music and the Writers’ Theatre production of “The Fight for Civil Rights.” For specific times and more information visit Chicago History Commemorative Days or call 773-576-7245.The Chicago History Museum is at 1601 N. The DuSable Museum of African American History honors King’s legacy with activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The museum’s 2014 event is “Where do we go from here: Chaos or Community.” For specific event activities and more information visit Dusable Museum Events or call 773-947-0600.The DuSable Museum of African American History is at 740 E. 56th Pl. The Chicago Sinfonietta performs music of the African plains and the American South at 7:30 p.m. at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60604. For tickets and more information visit Sinfonietta.

Carol Stream’s Outreach Community Center with the Wheaton Christian Center, Our Savior Lutheran Church and the Village of Carol Stream will have speakers, choirs and other activities, 7 p.m. at the Wheaton Christian Center, 610 E.
