Speaking of holidays, on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, WhiteHouse.gov announced President Barack Obama issued a presidential proclamation declaring Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2013 a federal holiday,
"NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 21, 2013, as the Martin Luther King, Jr., Federal Holiday. I encourage all Americans to observe this day with appropriate civic, community, and service projects in honor of Dr. King and to visit www.MLKDay.gov to find Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service projects across our country."
Are Banks Open Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 21, 2013?
A federal holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is always observed on the third Monday in January. This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on Jan. 21.
Some Rhode Island banks will be open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and others will only be available at supermarket kiosks. It's best to call your local bank branch before venturing out. Of course, almost all ATMs are open Martin Luther King Jr. Day, except where they may be located inside a supermarket or convenience store that is also closed for MLK Day.
Banks that are closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day will reopen for normal business Tuesday, Jan. 22.
