Happy MLK Jr.Day America! There are so many activities and volunteers throughout the U.S.A. are embracing the spirit by giving their time to all sorts of activities. Google is also celebrating Martin Luther King Day with an artistic Google Doodle.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Best known for leading in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience,King has become a national icon in the history of American progressivism.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of Dr. King's birthday on January 15th. It is a federal holiday and all public schools, post offices, and government buildings will be closed. MLK Jr. Day was first officially observed nationwide in 1986.

♦New York University's Annual MLK Celebration Week February 4-9, 2013 New York University is hosting an entire week of events in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. The week's schedule includes lectures, exhibits, film screenings, community service initiatives, and more. ♦Make a Difference Pledge at the children’s Museum of Manhattan - Teach your children about Dr. King's legacy and the role children can play in making a difference during a visit to the Children's Museum. Your child can make a pledge to make a difference in your neighborhood or community, add to the I Have a Dream mural, and hear the Harlem Gospel Choir perform. Children's Museum of Manhattan, 212 W. 83rd St. between Broadway and Amsterdam, 212-721-1234 Monday, January 21, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum admission is $11, free for museum members and children under one.

♦Martin Luther King, Jr. Walking Tour of Harlem NYC Discovery Walking Tours will mark the birth of Dr. King with a tour of Harlem that will include stops at the Apollo Theatre, Lenox Lounge (where Billie Holiday performed), and the site of the NYC assassination attempt. NYC Discovery Walking Tours -- Martin Luther King Weekend in Harlem January 19-21, 2013 at 12:45 and 2:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per person, call 212-465-3331 to make reservations and find out the meeting place.

♦ MLK Day Meal Prep In Coney Island Brooklyn, NY 11230 - January 21, 2013 Join Food Bank For New York City at one of our partnering agencies to help prepare and serve meals to New Yorkers in need on MLK Day! Use the holiday as a time to espouse the virtues of Martin Luther King, Jr. by volunteering to help your community in need! Volunteers are needed to help with food preparation, cooking, plating, lunch service and clean up. We ask that all volunteers be at least 10 years old accompanied by a parent, or 16 years old without. Some heavy lifting may be required. volunteer.foodbanknyc.org
