Martin Luther King Day 2014 is a federal holiday observed on Monday, Jan. 20, and many people are asking if banks, post offices, the DMV, Walmart, Target, Costco, and other stores are open or closed on Martin Luther King Day 2014. According to a Washington Post report on Jan. 17, 2014, all federal government offices and local government offices are closed nationwide since it is a federal holiday.

Martin Luther King Day 2014 completely closed:

All federal and local government offices are closed.

All post offices are closed and there is no mail delivery except for Express Mail.

All DMV offices are closed according to the California Department of vehicles website which provides a list of all DMV holiday closings.

Martin Luther King Day 2014 partially closed, open, or modified:

Banks: Most banks are closed for Martin Luther King Day. However, there are some private banks that will remain open. To confirm whether a bank is closed or open, it is best to visit an individual bank’s website to check on their holiday schedule.

Libraries: Most libraries are closed.

Trash and recycling: Trash and recycling is delayed one day. Private trash companies, however, might not change their schedule and keep their regular trash pick-up day.

Schools: Most schools, especially public schools, colleges, and universities observe Martin Luther King Day and are closed. Some public schools have chosen to observe the holiday on another day so it is best to confirm with the school. Private schools are open or closed according to their own holiday observance schedule.

Liquor stores: Liquor stores are open or closed according to the store owner’s discretion. Pennsylvania's liquor stores will be shut down for the day.

Transportation: Transportation services like buses, metros, trains, or trolleys generally run on a weekend/holiday schedule.

Parking: Traffic and parking regulations also generally follow a weekend or holiday enforcement. But double check each site to confirm.

Martin Luther King Day 2014 open:

Most Costco Wholesale warehouse stores and pharmacies are open with normal sale hours.

According to Costco’s store recording, Costco observes Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Easter, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving as a holiday but not Martin Luther King Day. Some Costco stores might choose to have a modified schedule or go on a weekend schedule so it is best to confirm store hours for Martin Luther King Day.

Retail stores like Walmart, Target, Sears, Kmart, or Best Buy are open but might observe a weekend store schedule.

Most restaurants are open on Martin Luther King Day 2014.
