After beating the Valencia Flyers 3-0 on Friday afternoon, the Tier III WSHL Fresno Monsters returned to Selland Arena for the second of 3 games this weekend. Based on the final score of 7-1, the Monsters hadn't lost any of their focus. As a matter of fact, they seemed intent on proving a point.
The Monsters got on the board first, when Fresno's own Jason "Nutbar" Beisinger scored about 3 minutes into the first period. Valencia's Smbat Defterderian got the Flyers into the game, but Martin Lundberg scored twice before the end of the period.
Monsters' defenseman David Kann scored the only two goals of the second period. Beisinger and Lundberg assisted on the first, while Gunner White and Cameron Coburn had helpers on the second.
With a safe lead, the Monsters turned up the physical aspect of the game in the third period. That resulted in several penalty kills, including a lengthy 5-on-3, but goalie Steven Zavori was up to the task and dealt with everything the Flyers threw at him. Martin Lundberg scored his third goal of the game 11:08 into the third period. Just 35 seconds later, the Monsters made a great play in the neutral zone and Don Coyle skated in and scored a beauty.
Other than the lopsided 7-1 final score, some of the other highlights came in the extra carricular department. Fan favorite Rob Kolander had a pretty good scrap, but it was Gunner White that really got the crowd going. He dominated the fight he got into, but lost his jersey in the process. He twirled it around to rally the crowd as he skated to the penalty box, getting a huge ovation.
The Monsters have one more game against Valencia this weekend. The puck drops at 10:00 AM Sunday Morning at Gateway Ice Center (Marks/Clinton). The Tier III Monsters are off to a great start this seasonand would definitely appreciate a good fan turnout. The games at Gateway are free for season ticket holders and just $5.00 for everyone else.
