INDIO, CA — (April 7, 2014) The 17 families living at Martha’s Village & Kitchen and their 31 children once again take part in the annual Easter Shopping Spree on Saturday, April 12, 2014. This year, Kohl’s department store in La Quinta will host these eager shoppers as they purchase school clothes and other necessities for their children.
Armed with a budget of up to $75 per child and guided by a volunteer mentor, the Easter Shopping Spree has become a fun competition to provide the most for each child for the least amount of money. The competition heats up when families scramble to come closest to, without exceeding, their shopping budget cap. Once people who were formerly homeless are able to apply the budgeting lessons they learn at Martha’s to a real-world situation like this, the value of these programs becomes more tangible and reinforces the message of self-sufficiency.
Volunteers will help guide families through selection and budgeting. As part of the Kohl’s Cares Program, Kohl’s is supplying five volunteer mentors. Martha’s Village & Kitchen is asking the public to contribute to this shopping trip by visiting www.marthasvillage.org and clicking on the Donate Online Today button at the top of the page.
