The U.S. Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force has done it again, this time tracking down two of Trenton’s most violent fugitives -- in Michigan.
Daryl Smith, 20, and Cedric Flippin, 21, were arrested late this afternoon in East Lansing on fugitive warrants.
The benefit of having local officers on the marshals' task force is the federal jurisdiction it gives them everywhere in the U.S. and its territories.
Just a few months ago, marshals in California captured a New Jersey man wanted for the murder of his 2-year-old daughter (SEE: Manhunt for dad in murder of 2-year-old daughter ends)
Smith and Flippin now must answer charges of aggravated assault and weapons offenses in connection with shootings in Trenton. The first was on Jan. 1, when Smith allegedly shot a man he was arguing with in the knee. The other involved both men, on Jan. 20.
According to the Marshals Service, Flippin had a shotgun and Smith a handgun when they kicked in the back door of a residence and shot two people laying in bed.
"Miraculously, all victims from both incidences survived these heinous attacks," the service said in a release.
However, detectives from the Mercer County Sheriff's Office and teh city, working as part of the task force "exhausted every investigative lead" and found the pair, the release says.
The pursuit took them to an off-campus housing complex at Michigan State University.
"The officers forwarded this critical intelligence immediately to the U.S. Marshals in Michigan," according to the release. "Late this afternoon, Federal Marshals and a Michigan State Police SWAT team descended upon an apartment in the ‘Landings at Chandler Crossings’ and arrested Smith and Flippin without incident."
Armed with a search warrant, they found and seized a .32-caliber handgun, the release says.
Both men remain in custody in Michigan, as New Jersey authorities seek to have them extradited.
